NIKE UNVEILS THE AIR JORDAN XX9!! (IS THIS THE FUTURE OF THE BASKETBALL SNEAKER??)

Friday, April 18, 2014

Yesterday, Nike and Jordan Brand unveiled the Air Jordan XX9 at Cafe Rouge in NYC. The great Tinker Hatfield, Michael Jordan, and a host of executives as well as the sneaker community were on hand for this event. And now, let's get to it!

There's something about this particular sneaker that is familiar. Off top, the Air Jordan XX9 seems like an updated Air Jordan XX* with a Nike I.D. elephant print-choice. It also seems like these would be a Melo 10 colorway, instead of an actual Air Jordan shoe.
We can see the future of Air Jordan and Nike, as a whole, trying to shy away from leather kicks. We ask, are consumers ready to pay more for a sneaker that doesn't use leather or suede/ nubuck?

Though I appreciate the aerodynamics that went in to the outer sole of the sneakers, the overall look of the shoe is too familiar to really get excited. For me, the excitement came in the BRAND NEW design of the sneakers. When you would anticipate what was next in the Air Jordan saga, from the VI's all the way through the XVIII's, I couldn't wait to see what Tinker came up with next!

It also seems like $225 is too much for these kicks. I appreciate what Tinker and his team have done with Jordan Brand throughout the years, but these look too much like a Carmelo sneaker, with a touch of the Air Jordan XIV and the XX8.
I guess being an OG, I'll always be in love with the retros. It must be the same thing as people wanting Jay-Z to re-do his first album every year. It's not gonna happen.  Cali "O" #TeamKickGame
