In 1992-1993 when Tinker Hatfield and Nike started working on the Air Jordan 9, Michael Jordan was in Asia to promote for Nike.
Tinker was really influenced by Japanese design. There is a lot of features on the shoe that you may not know which came from the Japanese culture.
Here is a comment from Tinker on the Air Jordan IX:“The Air Jordan IX represented the globalization of the Air Jordan brand name. Everybody around the world wanted to be like Mike. Take a close look at the soles of the shoes, we designed the different languages around the world that describes the sporting spirit of Michael Jordan and what he has done for the world of sports.
On the back of the Air Jordan 9 you will see a “Rising Sun” with the Jumpman logo. On the shoe it self there are words in different languages that best represents Michael Jordan, and those words are:
Left Shoe-Uhuru (Swahili) – “Independence”Cвобода (Russian) – “Freedom”Cпорт (Russian) – “Sport”Athletisch (German) – “Athletic”Muundaji (Swahili) – “Hope”
Right Shoe-Intenso (Italian) – “Intense”Liberté (French) – “Freedom”Anmutig (German) – “Graceful”Fuerza (Spanish) – “Force”Dédié (French) – “Dedicated”

When asked what shoe should be on the statue of Michael Jordan in front of the United Center in Chicago, Tinker said the Air Jordan IX, because the shoe represented MJ being a “global superstar". Tinker Hatfield-Autographing a pair of Nike "Air Max 1's".Which he designed!!"
This dude look's like he knows exactlly how special what he just recieved is!!
Tinker talking about some of the Classic Jordans he has designed..
Actually, it’s 13 questions for Tinker Hatfield. In a recent interview with Footwear News, Tinker Hatfield talks about the Air Jordan 2010.
What inspired the see-through TPU window on the new Jordan 2010?
TH: One of the points of inspiration that popped up was Michael’s strategy [on the court]. It’s unusual and clever — to be transparent at the beginning of the game, relative to what people know about you and how you play. But then at some time in the game, he would do something completely contrary, something out of character. So he said it would be great if we could see through this shoe.

A word from "Team Jordan" to Tinker..
The man who designed some of our Favorites.

The shoe is getting a tribute color way to one of Air Jordan’s brand forefathers, Mr. Tinker Hatfield. The shoe features a white upper with orange detailing on the lining and midsole stitching "ah-la" Air Mowabb(that Tinker designed). Black accents can be found on the midsole and swoosh while the outsole is done in an ice color way. These are said to be dropping via Quickstrike this month.
