Nasir Jones was just 20 years old when his debut album, Illmatic, dropped in 1994. It has since been hailed as a rap classic by music critics and fans alike, and is widely credited as helping to jumpstart an East Coast hip hop renaissance.
In the latest installment of the 2DopeBoyz/Restless Films’ “VS” series, Common pays tribute to the Queens native with an a capella rendition of the Illmatic cut “Life’s a Bitch.” Directed by Court Dunn, the clip is stripped down and raw, with no window dressings or second takes — just an MC and his singular voice. Check it out after the click, and look for Common’s new album, The Dreamer/The Believer to drop December 20th.
